April 1, Rajshahi: Clashes Again in Rajshahi - Police Officer Severely Injured [1]
In Rajshahi, North Bengal, activists of the Islamic Chhatra Shibir clashed with police during their protests against the arrest of their president. During the clashes, one police officer was severely wounded.

Police officials informed that the protesters have brutally wounded at least one police officer by hitting him on the head in the Shalbagan locality in Rajshahi. Afterwards, they snatched away is firearm too.
The injured police officer is in the hospital now. A member of the police brigade told BBC, “The attackers need not any description. Those who have been opposing the 1971 war crime trials did this.”

The general secretary of the Islamic Chhatra Shibir, Kamrul Hasan told BBC that Shibir was not involved in the clashes in Rajshahi in any way and went on to condemn the violence. He said, “We have no enmity with the police, why would we try to attack them?”

According to him, the sporadic incidents of violence have occurred due to hindrance by police to their peaceful protests. This particular incident happened during protests against the arrest of the president of the Islamic Chhatra Shibir. News of similar kinds of clashes has been reported rom Bogra, Feni and Patuakhali as well.

Chhatra Shibir has called for a dawn to dusk strike tomorrow in protest of the arrest. The 18-party alliance, led by B.N.P., has also called a country-wide dawn to dusk strike tomorrow demanding the release of their arrested leaders and members.

Earlier in Rajshahi district, on Sunday, members of Jamaat-E-Islami and its student wing, Shibir clashed with police. Three police were injured in the violence, according to District police. One police member lost both his wrists in one bomb blast.
On Sunday afternoon, the central president of the Chhatra Shibir, student wing of the Jamaat-E-Islami, Delwar Hossein was arrested. The detective branch has named him as an accused in several cases.


March 31, Rajshahi: Clashes in Rajshahi – 2 Police Injured in Blasts [2-6]
Two law enforcement members are wounded in cocktail blasts during attack by Jamaat-Shibir activists

Big clashes between Jamaat-Shibir activists and police erupted at around 10.30-10.45 am near Ranibazar Madrasa market in the city and went on for about half an hour. At least 20 people, including two policemen and Jamaat-Shibir members were injured during the class.

Two policemen were severely injured by Molotov cocktails thrown by Shibir cadres. One of them has been transferred to the Disable Hospital in Dhaka, the other had been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College.

Multiple sources informed that, Jamaat-Shibir members brought a procession from Ranibazar as part of previously announce protest rally. When police tried to break up the procession, the Jamaat-Shibir members started clashes with the police. During the clashes, besides brick-chips, they threw at least 15 Molotov cocktails at the police. In response police fired more than a hundred rounds of tears gas shell, rubber bullets, sound grenades and shotgun shells.

During the clashesh, Mokbul Hossein (31), an S.I. trainee and Rafiqul Islam (25), a constable were injured from explosions. 18 Jamaat-Shibir members were also hurt. Rafiqul Islam is currently under treatment at Rajshahi Medical and T.S.I. Mokbul Hossein has been transferred to Dhaka Disable Hospital from Rajshahi Medical College.

Rajshahi City Police (RMP) Commissioner S.M. Monir-Uz-Zaman informed us that T.S.I. Mokbul Hossein has been transferred to the Disable Hopsital in Dhaka. He went on to say, “Shibr is a terrorist organization. They must be uprooted.”

The in-charge at the police-box at Rajshahi Medical, S.I. Uttam Kumar informed that both the wrists of Mokbul Hossein had been blown away.

Assistant Professor of Orthopedic department at Rajshahi Medica, Dr. Debashish Rai told reporters that both Mokbul Hossein’s wrists were critically injured during the attack. If they were not severed, there was considerable threat of gangrene. And Rafiq had quite a number of splinters in his arm.

After the incidend, plice had apprehended 7 Jamaat members. This number got to as high as 25 later.
The O.C. Ziaur Rahman Zia told us that the arrestees had been brought to the station. Proper legal steps would be taken against them after interrogation.

After the clashes, there was wide spread terror among the general population at Shaheb-bazar, Zero Poit, Shonda-dighi intersection, Malopara Police post intersection, Binodpu, Kazla, Talaimari, Shalbagan and other places in the city.

Additional police have been deployed to guard against untoward incidents. The air and sitatuion around the city is quiet and very much of terror. There is a fear that more violence might erupt at any time in the city.

25 Jamaat-Shibir Members Arrested
The O.C. (Officer in Charge) of Boalia Model police station said that the members of the Jamaat-E-Islami brought out a procession in protest of the deaths of three of their members during clashes with police in Shibganj, Chapainawabganj.

O.C. Ziaur also informed that 25 Jamaat and Shibir members have been apprehended.

Elsewhere, the O.C. of Putia Thana Abdus Salam informed that Jamaat and Shibir activists blockaded the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway at around 5 pm by placing tree trunks on the road. They then went on to vandalize 5 vehicles. Once police arrived at the scene, they fled away.

March 31, Kushtia: Three-sided clashes at Islamic University, Police Shot, 30 Injured [7]

There was a three-sided clash at the Islamic University when police got involved in clashes between Chhatr League and Chhatra Shibir. During the clashes, a policeman named Kamal was shot by bullet and at least 30 others were injured. The incident took place on campus at around noon 12 pm at the University Campus.

Witnesses and police sources told that, the Shibir members had submitted a letter of grievance to the vice chancellor in demand of the solution of different problems in the university. When they tried to distribute this letter among the general students, they were prevented by Chhatra League members. At one stage of the ensuing quarrel, a fight broke out and the Shibir activists started throwing cocktails at the Chhatra League leaders and members. The whole campus was soon excited. When police tried to bring the situation under control after arriving at the scene, Shibir activists fired at them hurled cocktails at them as well. When police and Chhatra League members started a counter offensive, the whole campus turned into a war zone. When things started to get out of hand with cocktail blasts and gunfire, police tried to break up the Chhatra Shibir group by firing blank rounds. During these clashes, one policeman was wounded by bullet and 30 others were hurt.

University Information, Press and Communication branch officer Md. Rashiduzzaman Khan Tutul said, :A large number of police have been deployed to bring the situation under control. The police have taken a strong hold. The whole campus is now in a state of terror and anticipation.


March 30, Chittagong: Jamaat Leader Who Spearheaded the Killing of Policeman Is Arrested [8]

The Jamaat leader who spearheaded the carnage at Lohagora upazilla, including the murder of a police constable, after the death sentence of Delwar Hossein Sayeedee, Ferdous Quareshi (42) has been arrested by police.

A police squad led by Kotowali Station O.C. A.K.M. Mohiuddin Selim, raided the offices of one of his residential complexes in Chakbazar at around 4.30 pm on Saturday and arrested Quareshi. He is the Ameer of Boro Hatiya Union Jamaat in Lohagora.

On February 28 last, Jamaat-Shibir cadres hacked a police constable named Tareq to death in Amirabad, Lohagora after the verdict of Sayeedee. They also carried out mass destruction of different businesses including banks in the area. It’s been accused that Quareshi was leading this carnage.

O.C. A.K.M Mohiudding Selim told Bangla News that, Ferdous Quareshi is one of the accused named in the case file in the murder of constable Tareq and the violence in Amirabad. Acting on information from undercover sources, the police learned that Quareshi was hiding out in his business offices on Saturday afternoon. They raided the place and took him to Kotowali station.

The O.C. of Lohagora police station Md. Shahjahan told Bangla News, “Ferdous Quareshi is being held at the Kotowali station. He has been arrested on the charges of the cases against him.


March 28, Shaatkheera: Jamaat Attacks in Shaatkheera, Police Wounded by Bullet [9-13]
During the 2nd day of strikes called by the 18-party alliance, one police officer was hit by bullet during clashes between Jamaat-Shibir activists and the police.

Two other police members have been injured by bullets as well. The clash took place at Benerpota by the Shatkheera-Khulna highway on Thursday morning.

The O.C. of Sadar Thana Aman Ullah informed BDNews24.com that more than a hundred Jamaat-Shibir activists brought out a flash procession on Thursday and started to dig up the road near Benerpota. They also feel tree trunks on the road to block it. When the police on duty there tried to prevent, quite a few chases and counter-chases took place.

According to witnesses, when police got to the scene, DB police started to chase the Jamaat activists in plain clothes. Patrol police opened fire behind them.

The three police officers were injured were DB S.I. Reza, Constables Mostafiz and Anis. They have been admitted to the Shaatkheera City Hospital. District Police Super admitted to the gunfire but said, “The police officers were injured by bullets fired by Jamaat, not by the patrol polic.” Shibir has denied responsibility.

They claimed that they had been under sudden attack from Chhatra league cadres and DB police. They also claimed that 15 of their members were injured during the clashes. This could not be confirmed by the District Police Super

Elsewhere in the district, the strike was being observed spontaneously.


March 27, Rajshahi: Clashes Between Jamaat-Shibir and Police in Rajshahi, 9 Injured [14]

Massive clashes occurred between Jamaat-Shibir and police at two different locations in the morning on Wednesday, the first day of the 36 hour long strike called by the 18 party alliance led by B.N.P. At least 9 people including policemen and reporters were wounded during the clashes.

Elsewhere, 22 BNP activists including the City BNP Co-President and Council member from ward no. 28, Ansar Ali have been arrested by the Detective Branch of police.

According to police and witnesses, members of the Islamic Chhatra Shibir brought out a flash procession near Rajarhata in support of the strike around 7.30 am. When police tried to stop them the Shibir activists threw rocks and cocktails at them. This led to the start of the clash. In order to bring the situation under control, police fired a few rounds of rubber bullets and tear gas shells. This triggered a series of chases and counter chases. Five people, including a police officer and a reporter were injured in the clashes.

A procession in support of the strike, led by District B.N.P. President nadim Mostofa, was brought at Shikhpara in the city at around nine o’clock in the morning. As the procession reached the intersection of the city hospital road, police tried to stop them. When the two sides started a fight, B.N.P. activists threw rocks and cocktails at the police. The police returned in rubber bullets and tear gas shells. Four B.N.P. members including Nadim have been injured.

Earlier, City B.N.P. had brought out a procession at around 6.30 am in support for the strike. When they tried to reach their city offices in front of Bhubanmohan Park, police stopped them in front of the Malopaara Police post. Prevented from entering their offices by the blank rounds fired by the police, the activists’ procession was broken up.

Officer in Charge (O.C.) of the Detective Branch of Police in the city, Alamgir Hossein told prothom-alo.com that 22 people were arrested when they were found wandering suspiciously in front of a mosque in the locality of Binodpur.

Rickshaw, auto-rickshaw, CNG driven human transport traffic are quite normal in the city. Trains are running on schedule too. However, long distance buses are not operating.


March 27, Barisal: Five People Injured During Clashes Between Shibir and Police in Rupatoli [15]

At least five people including police A.S.I. Md. Anwar were injured during a series of chase and counter-chase between police and picketers in the early morning hours of Wednesday, the first day of the 36-hour strike called by the 18 party alliance.

The injured A.S.I. Anwar is getting treatment from Barisal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College (SBCM).

Jammat-Shibir activists blocked the Barisal-Jhalakathi highway by lighting fires and putting up brick blockades. When a police patrol reached the scene, the ensuing clashes saw five injured. Elsewhere, police also prevented separate processions brought out by City and District B.N.P. activists.

When a procession from Najeeb’s Pole led by the president of city BNP, M.P. advocate Mojibor Rahman Sarwar, attempted to reach BNP offices on Sadar road, at around 6.15 am, they were obstructed by police at the intersection of Line Road.

After discussions with the police, an impromptu rally was held there. Among the speakers were – M.P. Sarwar, city BNP general secretary Kamrul Ahsan Shaheen, Advocate Ali Haider Babul, Ziauddin Sikder Zia and others.

Earlier, at around 6 am, a procession was brought out in support of the strike from launch port area at Band Road. The procession was led by District (South) BNP president Ahsah Bhabib Kamal and general secretary Bilquis Jahan Shirin. When the procession reached the area near District Judge Court at Fazlul Huq Avenue, it was blockaded. Afterwards, the procession was broken up, and district BNP leaders spoke at the rally.

Around noon, the Nationalist Lawyer Forum brought a procession in support of the strike. Ameer of City Jamaat advocate Muazzem Hossein Helal, BNP leader advocate Ali Haider Babul. advocate Shahid Hossein, advocate Enayet Hossein and others took part in this.

The president of city Chhatra Shibir, Abdullah Al Nahian informed that, when Shibir activists blocked the roads in support for the strike, they were chased by the police. This resulted in a series of chases and counter chases and picketing. Afterwards, local members of the government party took sides with police and chased away the Shibir activists. The Shibir members then vandalized five to six vehicles, according to him.

On Tuesday night, police had arrested president of ward 17 Jamaat, Abdullah Awal and seven other BNP-Jamaat activists from the city and district of Barisal.

On the first day of the strike, intra and long distance buses were not operational. There were some rickshaws and auto-rickshaws in the city, but they were few in number. Most of the shops were closed. A large number of police and RAB members had been deployed at critical points in the city to tackle any sabotage or untoward situation.


March 26, Rajshahi: Bomb Attack at Rajshahi Police Station, 2 Police Wounded [16]
Reaction to arrests of Shibir activists

There was a bomb attack at Boalia Model Police Station on Tuesday night, an hour after two Shibir activists were arrested. Two police constables were wounded in the attack. They have been admitted of the hospital. After the incident, police apprehended four Shibir activists from raids in the city.

The two injured constables are Firoze Ahammed and Dabir Uddin. Constable Firoze had been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College. Constable Dabir was given first aid.

The police informed that, near the suburbs of Rajshahi, at around 7 pm, Shibir activists threw Molotov cocktails at a police vehicle. At that moment, the officer in charge (O.C.) Ziaur Rahman and Assitant Commissioner Rokonuzzaman were in the car. Police arrested two Shibir members from the crime scene. They were Selim Reza and Mushfiq Zaman. Both are fifth year students at Rajshahi Medical College.

Within an hour of their arrest, at 8.19 am, there was a huge explosion sound from inside the Boalia Police Station. Screams from two constables were heard.

Witnesses told that the bomb was thrown into the station over the eastern wall. They culprits ran away before police could make them out. They went on a raid immediately, but could not apprehend anyone. After the incident, a large number of police were deployed at the scene.

After a little while, police arrested from a raid at Rajshahi Liberation War Memorial District Stadium. At the same time, the others were arrested from the Kamruzzaman intersection.

Rajshahi City Police Commisioner S.M. Monir-Uz-Zaman visited the station. He told prothom-alo.com, “This was surely the act of Shibir. Two Shibir activists were arrested an hour before the incident. They attacked the station in reaction to the arrests.”

The Rajshahi Medical College section Chhatra Shibir secretary Shahdat Hossein said that no one from their campus goes to outside programs. He could not inform if anyone was apprehended.


March 26, Chuadanga: Police Constable Killed in Harinakundu – Jamaat Leader Arrested [17]

Police have apprehended the accused in the murder trial of police constable Omar Faruque, Jamaat leader Azizul Huq. Omar Faruque was killed in Harinakundu in Jhenidah during the strike called by the 18 party alliance.

Police arrested him from Talukkorora village of Alamdanga upazilla in Chuadanga district on Tuesday afternoon. It was known that, during the strike on the 3rd and 4th of this month, Jamaat and Shibir activists hacked and beat police constable Omar Faruque to death in Harinakundu in Jhenidah district. 50 policemen were also wounded in the attack as well. Azizul Huq is the number 15 accused in the case filled in this murder.

The officer in charge (O.C.) of Alamdanga police station Abdul Malek told Bangla News that the Jamaat leader went into hiding in this Talukkorora village. When the police raided the village on the basis of secret information, he tried to escape the village. The police squad chased him at this stage and arrested him.

The Chuadanga police super Abdur Rahim Shah Chowdhury told Bangla News that the arrested Jamaat leader has been handed over to the Harinakundu police.

The deceased police constable Omar Faruque was on duty at the Shonatanpur police post in Harinakundu upazilla.


March 25, Chittagong: Sudden Attack by Jamaat-Shibir at Shitakundu Leaves 3 Policemen Injured, 8 Vehicle Vandalized – 5 Arrested [18-21]

On Monday, during the dawn to dusk strike called by the Jamaat-Shibir in the greater Chittagong, 3 police constables were injured in a sudden attack by picketers at Shitakundu. Besides that, covered vans were vandalized at three spots and there were incidents of arson on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. At the city center, 5 autorickshaws were vandalized also. Police arrested 5 persons in connection with these incidents of violence.

The Officer in Charge (O.C.) of the Shitakundu Police Station Tapas Chandra Mitra informed that Shibir-Jamaat activists started to throw rocks and bricks at the police at around 1.30 pm in the intersection of the Siraj Bhuiyan Road in the upazilla. In this sudden attack, 3 policement were wounded severely. Of the injured constables, Jamal Hossein was wounded in the two hands and the head, Ibrahim was wounded in one eye, nose and different parts of his body; Noman also had serious injuries on different parts of his body. The three injured policemen were given first aid at Shitakundu Health Complex and were sent for better treatment to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. 5 Jamaat-Shibir members were arrested in connection with the attacks. They are Abul Kalam, Sabbir Hosseiin, Md. Delwar, Saddam Hossein Raju and Sharif Mohammad.

Elsewhere, Jamaat-Shibir members vandalized 3 vehicles and committed arsons on different spots on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. Witnesses told that, at around 8 a.m., the picketers vandalized and set fire to two cars, parked by the side of the Shitakundu Bypass Road. At around 9 a.m., in front of the Barabkundu High School, they threw a great deal of rocks and chips at another covered van which was coming from Chittagon. At this point, the van lost control and toppled over on the road. At 10 a.m., some Jamaat-Shibir activists smashed up 5 autorickshaws at the city center bazaar. The shopkeepers, in terror, closed up all the shops. The Jamaat-Shibir activists also fled from this place after the carnage. However, regular traffic was restored on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway from 2 p.m.


March 24, Kushtia: Police Camps and Posts Unprotected – Police Suffering Insecurity [22]

The police camps and posts, both permanent and temporary, in different unions in six upazillas in Kushtia do not have any walls. Besides, the amount of available forces for them is quite inadequate as well. In the light of recent events of aggression from Jamaat-Shibir the policemen station at these camps and posts are feeling very insecure.

According to the information provided from Kushtia Super offices, a police camp was established in Kalidashpur village in Doulotpur upazilla in 1998 by the then home minister to administer law and order. Later, the location was brought under the terrorist-prone zones and a total of 34 camps, 23 permanent and 11 temporary, were set up with assistance from locals. The permanent camps were setup in tin buildings which were built on lands bought from local residents. The temporary ones were set up in old government buildings and schools.

None of the camps have connection to the highway. Only two of them have surrounding walls. Quite a number of them are in the middle of fields. Each camp consists of 15 policemen, including one Sub-Inspection and one Assistant Sub-Inspector.

The members at the police camps informed that, of the 15 policemen in the camps, most of the time only 5-6 would be on duty. There is no support in the form of vehicles to carry out patrols. Since they have no walls to protect them, they are in a constant state of terror.

The S.P. of police in Kushtia Mafiz Uddin Ahmed told that multiple petitions have been made to the concerned ministry to increase the number of policemen from 15 to 25 and put up wall around the camps. A proposal to create connecting roads to the camp has been submitted to the Roads and Highways commission. Till now, nothing has come of that.


March 22, Summary Report: 8 Policemen Killed, 500 Injured [23]
129 Vehicles Smashed Up in Four and a Half Months of Violence, 37 Torched

Eight policemen have been in attacks from Jamaat-Shibir activists in the last four and a half months. Of them, four were beaten to death at Sundarganj in Gaibandha alone.
The other four were murdered in Lohagora, Chittagong, Harinakundu, Jhenidah, Koyra, Khulna and Peergacha, Rangpur. More than 500 policemen have been wounded as well. But how many times have they been the victims of bomb attacks, nobody really knows.
During the violence and agitation 129 police vehicles have been damaged. Of them 37 were burnt. This information was given from the police headquarters.
The violence started on November 5 with the attack on police at Motijheel, Dhaka by Jamaat-Shibir activists. The party took to the streets demanding the release of their leaders who were on trial for war crimes. According to police headquarter sources, from that day on the party has been relentless in their unexpected attacks on police, destruction of vehicles, bomb and cocktail attacks on roads and vehicles and torching of buses and trucks before strikes. Their latest acts of terror and violence against human and nature include felling tree trunks on the road to create blockades and digging up rail tracks to disrupt train transportation.
The members of Jamaat-Shibir went on rampage in several parts of the country after the death verdict of Delwar Hossein Sayeedee in charges of war crimes on February 28 last. On that day they hacked four policemen to death in Bamondanga, Gaibandha. On that very day Jamaat-Shibir attacked the duty police on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Lohagora station, Chittagong. They wounded three police officers by slashing them. One of the policemen later succumbed to his wounds. One of the firearms was snatched away, but was later recovered.
Jamaat-Shibir member also beat and slashed 17 police and Ansar member including the officer in charge of Kotchandpur police station in Jhenidah. Six of the injured were transferred to the Combined Military Hospital in the capital Dhaka in helicopters for better treatment.
On March 1, a police convoy was attacked in Paachbibi, Joypurhat. On that day, armed activists of Jamaat and Shibir attacked the members of law forces in Rajarhat, Joldhaka thana in Nilfamari. As one member of BGB was injured in the attacked, they fired back ten times. One person was killed.
On March 3, a policeman was butchered to death in Harinakundu. 5 police posts were burnt to the ground in Bogra by Jamaat-Shibir that day. They also attacked Shahjanpur police station. On the same a BGB patrol car was set upon by miscreants in Shatkheera, 3 BGB members were injured.
On March 5, a police officer succumbed to his bullet wounds in Peergacha. On March 10, a police officer was shot to death while trying to catch a culprit in Koyra, Khulna.

Vehicles Damaged: Police
Headquarter sources informed that from November 5 to March 6, Jamaat and Shibir have damaged 92 vehicles of police, RAB and BGB from in unexpected attacks. They have vandalized 6 buses, 8 human haulers, 33 pick-up vans, 3 microbuses, 7 trucks, 11 motorcycles, 5 jeeps and 2 cars including a requisitioned bus.
During this time frame, 12 vehicles including 2 patrol cars and a microbus of RAB have also been damaged. 3 BGB patrol pick-ups have been smashed up. Similarly, 37 vehicles of law enforcement forces have been torched in this time frame. Of them are 10 motorcycles, 6 trucks, 3 buses, 3 requisitioned buses and the rest aer jeeps and pick-up vans.


March 19, Rajshahi: Policmen Injured in Molotov Cocktail Explosion in Rajshahi [24, 25]

On Tuesday, during the strike in Rajshahi, 5 policemen including an Assistant Commissioner were injured by a Molotov cocktails thrown by Shibir activists. During the clashes, 5 B.N.P. members were also injured. 62 people have been arrested by police so far.

According to police sources and witnesses, police went to Nichabazar in Binodpur in the city when they heard that Jamaat-Shibir activists were gathering there. When they reached there at around 6.45 am, Jamaat-Shibir members started throwing rocks and brick as well as Molotov cocktails at them from three sides. According to police the rocks came down like rain, and 30-40 cocktails were thrown. The Assistant Commissioner of Motihar station Abul Hasnat along with four other policemen was injured by the rocks and cocktails. In order to bring the situation under control, police fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells. At one point, the Jamaat-Shibir members were scattered and fled into the adjacent small roads. According to a leader of the Rajshahi University Shibir section, 15 Shibir activists were injured.

Earlier in the morning, rocks and marbles were thrown on top of the police in Binodpur, from the houses of lawyer Khorshed Alam, former teacher of Rajshahi University Abdul Huq and retired police officer Emdadul. Huq. Students rent some part of all of these houses. Afterwards at around 9 am, police arrested 62 people including the house owners from those homes and the nearby area.

Almost at the same time there were clashes between BNP leaders-members and police at Malopara in the city. When a procession led by Central B.N.P. Joint Secretary Mizanur Rahman Minu was brought out in support of the strike and reached Malopara, police started to chase them. BNP activists then started to throw rocks and cocktails at the police. Police tried to break up the rally by shooting rubber bullets and tear gas shells at them. There was a series of chase and counter-chase between the two groups. The activists damaged some shops and houses. During the clashes, five BNP activists were injured. Central B.N.P. leader Mosaddeq Hossein Bulbul said, “The policemen attacked our peaceful procession and wounded our activists.”

The Rajshahi City Police Commissioner visited Bindodpur in the morning. He told reporters that the police were attacked with rocks from three houses without any provocation. Students live in all the three houses. He said that it was being analyzed – if the attacks could have been possible without the help of the residents of the houses.

Light vehicles, such as rickshaws, autorickshaws, CNG driven transports have been regular on the road. However, none of the long distance buses took off. Train transportation was as usual. A number of police and RAB members were deployed at different intersections of the city.


March 10, Khulna: Policeman Shot to Death in Koyra, Firearms Looted in Bagha [26-28]
Jamaat snatches away criminal

Police constable Mofizul Islam (50) was shot to death in Koyra upazilla in Khulna on Saturday night while trying to apprehend Jamaat leaders accused of violent activities. 6 policemen were injured in a similar incident in Bagha, Rajshahi. Their firearms were snatched away.

Police and local residents informed that on Monday and Tuesday last, members of Jamaat had beaten up several Awami League activists including the president of the south Angtihara ward AL Nurul Amin. They had also vandalized a number of houses. The victims had filed three cases in connection with those attacks at Koyra police station. Around two in the night on Saturday, a group of 13 policemen led by the O.C. of Angtihara camp besides Sundarban, S.I. Mominur Rahman, went to Golkhali village of South Bedkashi union. There they arrested upazilla Jamaat members Goni Sardar and Abdur Rashid Sardar. At this point, Jamaat supporters started to announce from the mosque, “Police are attacking us, come and fight them from wherever you are.” A few hundreds of Jamaat activists gathered and attacked the police. They were able to snatch away the two arrested persons. Police fired on the mob to control the situation. When the attackers fired back, police constable Mofizul Islam was hit in his left leg. The police squad brought the injure policeman to the police camp in Angtihara. On the way to Koyra town on a engine-powered shallow trawler, Mofizul succumbed to his wounds.

On the other hand, villagers informed that during the exchange of gunfire between the two parties the following were injured of Golbuniya village – Abul Bashar Morol (52), Mohibullah Gazi (18), Halima Begum (40), Jaheda Begum (45), Shahida Begum (45), Jahanara Begum (36) and Meherunnessa (35). They are taking treatment in secret in fear of the police.

A witness to the incident, Abdur Rouf Sheikh (42) of Golkhali village told Prothom Alo, “12-13 police came from Angtihara camp and arrested Jamaat leaders Goni Sardar and Abdur Rashid Sardar. After that, their people announce from the mosque that – police are attacking us, bring whatever you have to fight them. A great deal of people came and attacked the policemen. Both sides used gunfire.

However, ameer of Koyra upazilla Jamaat Sohrab Hossein claimed that Awami League supporters and dacoits from the Sundarbans attacked the policemen. Nobody from Jamaat was actually involved.

The officer in charge (O.C.) of Koyra police station, Fazlur Rahman said that, Jamaat activists organized themselves to attack the police squad and were able to snatch away the two detainees. At one point they started throwing rocks and opened fire on the police. Mofizul Islam was shot during the exchange. Later he died on his way to the hospital. He was from Lohagora upazilla in Narail.

Assistant police super (B-Circle) Abdul Kader Begh quoted doctors in informing that constable Mofizul died due to excessive loss of blood. His dead body is being kept at the morgue in Khulna Medical College.


March 6, Rajshahi: Massive Clashes After Jamaat-Shibir Activists Attack Police in Rajshahi City [29]

An assistant police commissioner was shot during clashes between Jamaat-Shibir and police, RAB and local residents in Rajshahi on Wednesday afternoon. At least 20 people, including a reporter were also injured.
After the incident, the angered locals vandalized and set fire to the Retina Coaching Center which is run by Shibir. The injured Assistant Commissioner of City Police Sohel Mahmud and another wounded have been admitted Rajshahi Medical College according to police sources.

The Assistant Commissioner (A.C.) of Boalia Zone of police Rokonuzzaman said that around 4.15 pm, Jamaat- Shibir activists brought out processions from three sides and surrounded the police on duty in Hetmonkha area. They then threw rocks and Molotov cocktails targeting the policemen.

When police tried to prevent them, clashes erupted. Afterwards, RAB and local people joined police against the Jamaat-Shibir activists. At one point, the clashesh spread to Hetmonkha, Hosniganj, Shobjipara, Ghoshpara intersection and Pathanpara. The whole area turned into a war zone.

RAB and police fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells to bring the situation under control. The police officer also said the Jamaat-Shibir and activists had created a great terror by their incessant attacks with cocktails and brick-chips. Besides they were firing on the police and RAB from buildings adjacent to the Rajshahi museum.

Police apprehended 7 people during the clshes. A.C. Rokonuzzaman also said that, after the clashes, the angry mob vandalized the Retina coaching center on Ghoshpara intersection and set fire to it. Five rooms on the bottom floor were torched. Later, the fire brigade and the police brought the fire under control.


March 4, Barisal: Policemen and Journalists Injured in Attack by Jamaat in Barisal [30]
7 people including three policemen and two journalists have been injured in Jamaat-Shibir attacks during the second day of strikes in Barisal

The O.C. of the Airport police station Md. Shahidullah informed that, police tried to stop Jamaat-Shibir activists’ procession in support of the strike at around 6.30 am. The Jamaat-Shibir members had brought out the procession in front of Bagiya madrasa on the Lakutia road in the city and were carrying sticks and rods with them.

He said, “The participants in the procession attacked police at this point and started to beat police and passers-by alike. The police were able to disperse them by firing tear gas shells.”

During the clashes, the strike supports vandalized one human hauler carrying police and two motorcycles. A Shibir member by the name of Selim was arrested during the incident according to the O.C.

The injured during the clashes, S.I. of Airport station Khandaker Abul KHayer, A.S.I Khokon Chandra De, contable Rahman, Channel 24 cameraman Sohel, My TV cameraman Bashir, Sramik League leader of city ward 29 Soleiman Bhuiyan and Chhatra league activist Fafiq Mollah have been admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medcial College Hospital.

Of the injured, Soleiman Bhuiyan’s condition was critical, said Barisal District Chhatra League Convening committee member Reaz Bhuiyan to bdnews24.
