I am little embarrassed about the intellectual property rights issue in this writing. I am not sure whether mentioning a link or pointer to a song already hosted on the internet violates anyone's right. I promise that if any such infringement happens it will definitely be a temporary thing. I have done it for documentation only. I have added the songs as I have come across so far. The rights of these songs of course belong to the people who made them. Some of them are added to my SoundCloud account without any permission. Please let me know whenever you want your song down from there. Just leave me a pointer to the original source of the song when you want me to take it down.
I am not even sure whether this website is the best place for such documentation effort. Moreover, neither am I an expert in music.. So, feel free to put your suggestions as comments about how to improve this article.
For the uninitiated, this article is the English translation of the Bangla article শাহবাগের গানগুলি . The title of this article is the direct translation of the title of the Bangla version. The Shahbag Movement is one of the largest popular uprises since the birth of Bangladesh through a liberation war in 1971. It was triggered on February 5, 2013 when the war criminal Qader Molla who was under trial was not handed in the death sentence. One of the six charges against Molla was that he led a group of militia which killed 344 innocent villagers in April 24, 1971 in Mirpur, Dhaka. Initially the participants of the movement were mostly the youth but people from all walks of life joined later. Through a series of eventful moments and turns, the first wave of the Shahbag movement ended when the appellate division awarded him the death sentence for killing a mother of three along with two daughters and one 2 year old boy and raping one of the daughters before killing her. He was executed on December 12, 2013. Justice was served.
You will be stunned to know that 133 songs have been composed over these 310 days. So, the Shahbag movement gave us a new song in every 2.3 days. Isn't it mesmerizing? To put it in the context, it looks from the press reports that even during Arab spring, which took place across 18 Arab countries, not so many fresh songs have been produced in such a short period. This large number of songs from the Shahbag movement is a testament of the depth and breadth the movement was able to achieve.
I would love to know whether any other popular up rise has created that many songs anywhere in the world. Without further ado let's build up the list.
